Free vs paid AI writing tools: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Writesonic

Where free plans are enough for blog and social copy, when paying makes sense, why Writesonic is now a different product, and how to stop AI text sounding generated.

The honest answer to "which AI writing tool should I buy?" is, for most people, none yet. Most of what you need for blog posts, product descriptions and social copy is in the free plans of general assistants. Pay when you hit their limits every day.

What happened to Writesonic

Writesonic used to be a template writer on top of GPT models. Its pricing page now describes an AI search visibility platform: it tracks how often your brand appears in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews answers and offers content and audit tools to improve it. Starter is $79 a month billed annually with 50 tracked prompts, 15 AI articles and 10 site audits; Basic is $199 and Growth $399. There is a free trial without a card and a 7-day refund. If you want cheap blog drafts, this is no longer the tool. If you are a brand worried about AI answers recommending competitors, it is interesting.

How far free plans go

ChatGPT Free offers unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse guardrails, with limited uploads, images and deep research; Go, Plus and Pro raise limits, and Go may show ads. Claude Free resets limits in five-hour windows; Pro is $20 a month or $17 annual. Gemini is free with a Google account; Google AI Pro and Ultra raise limits.

When paying makes sense

You hit limits daily, you work with long files, or you need projects to store brand instructions. Pay for a model, not a wrapper; most template tools run the same models with a markup.

Why AI text sounds like AI

Stock openers ("In today's fast-paced world"), identical paragraph shapes, relentless balance with no opinion, and aphorism endings. In Turkish, add translation smell: overused formal suffixes and needless pronouns.

Fixing it

Keep a reusable instruction with banned phrases, two or three sample paragraphs in your voice and your form of address. Never publish a draft as is; read it aloud. Add something only you know. Verify every price and statistic against the official source.

SEO

Google's position is that AI assistance is not the problem; mass-produced content made to manipulate rankings is. Use AI for research, drafts and editing, and make every post add something real. See our keyword research guide.

My picks

Solo blogger: a free plan plus a good instruction. Freelancer: one $20 plan with projects per client, not two. Brand tracking AI visibility: Writesonic or Semrush's AI tools. Template writers like Jasper: hard to justify without a big marketing team. For model differences, see ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for writing.

Does AI-written content rank?

Edited, verified posts with real value can. Bulk template posts are risky.
